P321 AERTEL 1 321 Wed 23 Feb 08:42:14 1/10 Cinema Texas Chain Saw Massacre (18) ** Apart from one stand out scene on a bus, it's a forgettable horror fare with high production values and heaps of bloody gore (if that s your thing). Predictable and glossy with none of the grit and rawness you d expect or hope from a TCM requel. Stick it on with low expectations there might be some thrills to be found. A missed opportunity, it s a property that s screaming for new ideas and a fresh take on a horror icon. Let s hope someone else has another attempt to bring back the buzz before Leatherface turns 90. P321 AERTEL 1 321 Wed 23 Feb 08:42:22 2/10 Cinema Marry Me (12A) *** After her Oscar-worthy turn in Hustlers, hopes were high that Jennifer Lopez would continue picking edgier material for her to-do list. Marry Me has a few interesting bits about the reality of life and relationships in the public eye - something Lopez has already written a book about called True Love - but it doesn't ask a lot of its star-producer and neglects her comedy chops. Still, her fans will have no issues with the easy chemistry between herself and Owen Wilson as the clock winds down to the leave-me-breathless conclusion. P321 AERTEL 1 321 Wed 23 Feb 08:41:11 3/10 Cinema Doineann (15A) **** Some of the best of Irish filmmaking and television being produced is as Gaeilge. From Ciaran O Cofaigh's An Bronntanas (now showing on RTE One at 11.25pm on Tuesdays) to last year's incredible Arracht, directed by Tom Sullivan, ta na healaiona tri Ghaeilge faoi bhlath. Doineann (meaning 'storm', in this case) is a tense, dark thriller and makes a strong case for Gaelic noir as a genre. It's a threatening tale with plenty of twists and misconceptions about the roles people play in life versus who they really are. Siun Ni Dhuinn Entertainment Index 300 Next Albums Books Reviews Index
P321 AERTEL 1 321 Wed 23 Feb 08:41:19 4/10 Cinema Death on the Nile (12A) *** Kenneth Branagh has the usual distinction of having two films he's directed in Irish cinemas at the same time. First came the Oscar-nominated Belfast, and now it's joined by his Murder on the Orient Express follow-up, with the man himself double-jobbing once again as Agatha Christie's master sleuth Hercule Poirot. There are no detective prizes for figuring out which film should be your priority. Entertainment Index 300 Next Albums Books Reviews Index

P321 AERTEL 1 321 Wed 23 Feb 08:41:35 6/10 Cinema Belfast (12A) ***** Once in every while, a film comes along that could get even the fussiest out of the house - and bring them back a few hours later in better form. This is the gemstone for 2022. A beautiful coming-of-age story, a pitch-perfect celebration of family, and a fitting tribute to the goodness in a city and its people, Belfast crams a lot into an hour and a half. Writer-director Kenneth Branagh's return to his birthplace to explore his early years has inspired him to deliver his best work - poignant, funny, and timeless. A must-see. P321 AERTEL 1 321 Wed 23 Feb 08:41:43 7/10 Cinema Boiling Point (15A) ***** An edge-of-the-seat film - set in a restaurant. Boiling Point has more tension than most thrillers, and you'll be doing well to find a more immersive movie experience among 2022's releases. Filmed entirely in one take, writer- director Philip Barantini's searing study of the workplace and its diverse personalities sees Stephen Graham leading a superb cast as a close-to- breakdown chef. It feels like you're watching a documentary - the performances are that good. Entertainment Index 300 Next Albums Books Reviews Index

P321 AERTEL 1 321 Wed 23 Feb 08:41:58 9/10 Cinema Licorice Pizza (15A) ***** Writer-director Paul Thomas Anderson is back on his home turf of California's San Fernando Valley - and back with another must-see. The location for Boogie Nights and Magnolia is now the setting for a pantheon-joining coming-of-age movie that gives the viewer a first-class ticket in the time machine, with the controls set for 1973. There, Cooper Hoffman, son of the late Phillip Seymour Hoffman; and Alana Haim, singer-guitarist with the band Haim; deliver life-affirming breakout performances.
